Wild Graduation Shoe Fashion

Graduation season is upon us. I for one am super stoked; since I will be receiving my bachelor’s degree in exactly twelve days! While many of us future graduates should be concerned about finals…..we have more important things to worry about! Like what type of shoes we are going to wear on our big day! Our gowns will completely cover our dresses, so how else will we stand out from the sea of graduates? Also let’s face it, graduation ceremonies tend to be a bit of a drag. But I tend to keep myself entertained by looking at the graduates “interesting” choice of footwear. Let’s explore some potential  graduation shoe options shall we?

These shoes were actually worn at a graduation ceremony in London. Ummm, I am truly at lost for words. This is just wrong on so many levels.

I don’t understand the concept of these shoes at all. They look extremely dangerous! Plus, why on earth would someone want to walk like a toddler who has a full diaper on?

Is this really necessary? I mean what’s the point of these shoes? They aren’t even remotely attractive. I can only imagine myself wearing these on opposite day.

Yeah I prefer to have fish on my plate and not on my feet. Yikes! Nooo thank you!

Ouch these are extremely painful to look at. Can you imagine wearing these throughout the entirety of your graduation ceremony?

I don’t know about all of you, but I think I’m leaning towards purchasing simple, classy and comfortable shoes for graduation. For those of you with the same objective, here are some examples for inspiration:

Spring 2014 Fashion Trends!

The sun is shining, birds are happily chirping and flowers are smiling. This can only mean one thing: Spring is in full Bloom. What do I Iove most about Spring, you ask? Why, the Spring 2014 fashion trends of course. Below, you’ll find some of my favorite Spring fashion  trends!

I love that we finally get to fully rock Easter colors all season long. It’s time to whip out and wear our favorite pieces in muted shades of yellow, purple, green , pink and blue. I simply adore pretty pastels. I am a firm believer that what you decide to wear in the morning can shape your attitude throughout the whole day. Personally, I love to wear color because it puts me in a positive and happy mood. Thus, the next time you’re feeling a bit gloomy, the easiest way to lift your spirits, is by wearing a colorful outfit.

Favorite Designer Looks: Burberry 2014 Spring/Summer Collection

Gone are the days when it was only socially acceptable for men to wear trousers. My oh my how far we have come. In the olden days, it was common for women to only wear skirts and dresses to work. It wasn’t until the early 1900’s that most women began to wear pants to work. They began to lean towards wearing mostly pants for obvious reasons; pants are both practical and comfortable. Back then, since designers did not produce trousers for women, women had no choice but to wear men’s trousers. In fact, Coco Chanel was one of the few designers during her time to popularize the pants-wearing trend for women, when she first introduced her specially made female trousers. Moreover, light and spacious trousers are perfect for the Spring weather. You can effortlessly elongate your legs, by wearing high-waisted trousers. Rock a pair of trousers with a simple airy blouse and you’ll look tres-chic!

Favorite Designer Looks: BCBG Max Azria, Trina Turk, Rosie Assoulin

Tea-Length Skirts:

This is by far one of my favorite Spring 2014 fashion trend. Move over mini, midi and maxi skirts! It’s time for tea-length skirts to shine. I know what you are all thinking. “Tea-length skirts, that sounds like something my grandmother would wear!” I admit these skirts are a bit on the conservative side. However, these skirts exude elegance, sophistication and glamour. If you want to pull off a sexy and daring look, you can do so by either pairing this skirt with a cropped or sleeveless top. If you want to rock a slightly less conservative look with these skirts, the key here is to show more skin above the waistline, since this skirt will fully cover your legs.

Favorite Designer Looks: Christian Siriano, Alice & Olivia, Proenza Schouler

Lavish Fashion Fantasies

I am a “Fashion Fantasizer”. There I admit it. You probably have no clue what that term means, well that’s because I just made it up. But hear me out. Gone are the days when we had to physically go to the mall and “window shop” and fantasize about all the amazing expensive pieces we wish we could add to our wardrobe closet. Nowadays, we don’t “window shop” we (insert lame joke here) “screen shop”.

I personally enjoy perusing the web for items I wish I was willing and able to splurge on. This may sound silly, but I like to think of “screen shopping” as a therapeutic activity. I believe it’s a fun and relaxing activity for us fashionistas to engage in when we’re stressed. Below are my three favorite ridiculously expensive fashion finds for this month.

Valentino Long-Sleeve Embroidered Bambolina Dress:

Valentino Long-Sleeve Embroidered Bambolina Dress

Valentino is one of my favorite designers, thus it’s no surprise that I immediately fell in love with this dress the moment I saw it online. This dress is from Valentinos’ Spring 2014 collection. Perhaps I am drawn to this dress because of my African background. From my perspective, this looks like an African/Egyptian/ Aztec inspired dress. The vibrant colors and geometric patterns on this dress are quite mesmerizing. I love the hints of coral, gold and black; the color combination of this dress is completely unexpected. The Bambolina dress has the following features:

  •  Sheer embroidered dress
  • Fishnet mesh with multicolor embroidery
  • Round neckline; long sleeves.
  • Full, flared circle skirt
  • Hidden back zip
  •  Fluted hem hits mid-thigh
  • Cotton/nylon/polyester
  •  Silk organza lining
  •  Made in Italy

This dress can be purchased at Neiman Marcus. It can be yours today for a whopping $6,690. Any takers?

The Infamous Hermes Birkin Bag:

bag 2bag threebag

I absolutely love the simplicity and the quality of these bags. The French fashion powerhouse, Hermes produces the Birkin bag. Hermes named the bag after British actress Jane Birkin in 1984. We’ve all seen this bag on the arms of celebrities everywhere and we’ve also seen the knock off versions in the fashion alleys of Downtown, Los Angeles. If you haven’t already researched how you can possibly get your hands on this bag, well you are in for one heck of a surprise. As it turns out, these bags cost anywhere from $9,000-$34,000 or more. Not to mention, you have to be a VIP to be able to get the inside scoop on how to even purchase one of these bags.

As a potential buyer, you have to go through a certain process in order to add the infamous Birkin to your collection of bags. Most of the time, as “shady” as this may sound; you have to find a local Birkin dealer. In most instances, you have to know somebody, who knows somebody and so on, to get a hold of these dealers. If you live in France, you can easily just visit the local Hermes store, and look like you’re able to afford a $34,000 bag….meaning dress the part(because we all know what happened to Oprah when she attempted to buy an expensive bag) and ask for one. The shop associates typically have the bags in the back room.

Christian Louis Vuitton’s Five Shades of Nude Collection:

How many of you have trouble purchasing the right shade of nude heels? This is a major issue for me as I am an African-American female. I actually have no problem wearing traditional (beige) nude heels if it compliments my outfit. However, the whole purpose of wearing nude shoes is so that you are able to achieve the slimming, leg lengthening look. However, this particular objective is hard to accomplish if your nude shoes don’t match your skin tone.

Thankfully, last year, Louis Vuitton realized that this was an issue that most women face and created the Five Shades of Nude limited edition collection. Just like the name suggests, this collection consists of five shades of nude heels that are supposed to match a variety of skin tones. The shoes are no longer available on Louis Vuitton’s’ official site, but you can probably find it at a different retailer or ebay if your desperate to find them. These shoes will cost you anywhere from $625-$1000 and up.

Although, these items are tempting to purchase, I am not willing to purchase them nor am I able to (I mean for goodness sakes I’m only a college student). However it’s nice to fantasize about owning them.

What are some overly expensive pieces that you wish you had in your closet?

Until next time….And remember always dare to be chic <3.

Los Angeles Fashion Week 2014

Los Angeles Fashion Week (LAFW) takes place every March and October in various locations throughout the Los Angeles area.

LAFW provides fashion enthusiasts the opportunity to join forces and collectively share their passion for fashion. This year, LAFW took place March 9th-13th. Many established and well-known designers took LAFW by storm with their new Fall/Spring collections. However, this year, I was most excited about seeing the collections of up-and-coming designers, such as Michael Costello, Walter Mendez and Nancy Vuu.

Michael Costello is an American couture fashion designer. He is the first ever American rom (gypsy) designer. He was featured on season eight of project runway, and he finished in 4th place. He was also on project runway’s all-star season and he received first place. Michael Costello has been showcased at both LA and Mercedez Benz Fashion Week. Furthermore, Michael Costello’s designs have been seen all over the red carpet. Most recently, Beyonce wore one of his gowns at the Grammys, as shown below.

Michael Costello is primarily known for his glamorous gowns, but his other wardrobe pieces such as, his blazers and skirts are equally as extravagant.  The main colors of his fall collection are silvers, golds, neutrals and whites. Most of the pieces in the fall collection are light and airy.

Michael Costello’s Fall 2014 Collection:

Walter Mendez is a young designer whose pieces are generally found on  television and red carpets. Walter has been featured on publications such as Women Wear Daily, and Apparel News. His designs have been showcased at LAFW for the past couple of years. Moreover, Walter was awarded the “Designer of the Year Award” by the World Networks. He has also been one of the featured designers of the Go Red Fashion Show (The American Heart Association Charity Event).

Walter Mendez’s fall collection consists of exquisite cocktail dresses and sleek gowns. Most of the dresses are elegant and chic yet exude sexiness. The dresses have plunged necklines, bare shoulders and are made of sheer fabrics. The color palette of Mendez’s spring collection consists of reds, blacks, blues, golds and nudes.

Walter Mendez’s Fall 2014 Collection:

Nancy Vuu, is one of my all-time favorite designers when it comes to childrens-wear. She creates vintage-inspired clothing for kids. There isn’t any public bibliographical information on Nancy Vuu. However, photos of her spring 2015 designs are all over the internet.  Her spring collection primarily consists of colors, such as golds, fuchsias, and pinks. Most of the designs from the collection have lace and floral detailing.

Major 1990’s Fashion Comebacks!

The holidays are upon us and the end of the year is vastly approaching. Where has the time gone? Seriously?!? I’m a 90’s baby and proud of it! Thus, I can’t help but think about some of the 90’s fashion trends that resurrected this year. We are all guilty of wearing questionable outfits during the 90’s. Who would have thought, that we would have the opportunity, to redeem ourselves; by wearing our favorite 90’s apparel but with a modern twist in the year 2013! Below, you will find some of my favorite 90’s fashion comebacks!

1. Denim on Denim Trend:

Yup. This really did happen. Although, I still can’t get over the fact that this actually transpired! This trend was extremely popular in the 90’s, and its’ back with a vengeance this year. You could easily fall victim to the denim on denim trend (and I’m sure Justin and Brittney can attest to this fact). You must exercise extreme caution when you attempt to try to pull off this look. However, it isn’t impossible to achieve the perfect look with this trend.

Look Book 1:

2. Overalls:

Oh my! Well, where do I begin with this trend? Overalls are just not used for farming anymore. This can be a good or bad thing depending on how you wear them. Overalls tend to be unflattering because they can hide your figure. They can also contribute to making you, both look and feel disheveled. But there is no denying, that overalls can also make you look chic and adorable if you wear them the right way.

Look Book 2:

3. Crop Tops/Bandeaus:

Hey Scary Spice, Ginger Spice and Sporty Spice, what were you ladies thinking? Its strange, back in the 90’s people would gasp, at the fact that you were showing off your midriff. It was considered tacky, for one to bare their stomach for all of the world to see. But now in the year 2013, we are all embracing this trend! Although these items make you show off some major skin, you can still achieve a classy look when you wear them (if worn with high waisted bottoms).

Look Book 3:

4. High waisted Jeans:

Oh snap! Weren’t these at one point considered ‘Mom’ jeans? Oh well, because now in the year 2013, this trend is smoking hot! I love high waisted jeans because they accentuate your figure. Not to mention, they prevent you from being dubbed ‘crackerella’ by your friends, when you bend/sit down.

Look Book 4:

What’s your favorite 90’s trend? Comment in the section below, and remember…..AlWAYS DARE TO BE CHIC! ❤

P.S. Okay writing this blog, put me into a serious nostalgic high. I spent hours reminiscing on other thing’s from the 90’s, such as popular t.v. show’s. If you’re interested, here’s a quick video. I dare you not to tear up! 🙂

Fall 2013 Color Tends!

Fall is simply a strikingly beautiful season. Thanks to the arrival of fall, we can finally take nice strolls around the park, admire the brightly colored trees and dance with the falling vibrant colorful leaves. Fashion designers take full advantage of this colorful season, and use nature as their inspiration. What I look forward to each season, is finding out what the color trends are. Currently my favorite color trends for this season are burgundy, mustard yellow and moss green. These colors simply exude fall. What better way to embrace the fall, than to incorporate some of these rich and warm colors into your wardrobe. These colors are all over the runway and are available in everything from lipsticks to shoes.

Burgundy is available in all types of hues. Such as maroon, wine, oxblood etc. You’re bound to make a bold statement in this color. I have personally, been obsessed with this color for years. I am so glad burgundy is finally getting all of the attention it so rightfully deserves. If you’re unsure about how to rock this color, or if you don’t know where to begin, your quest for the ultimate burgundy find, have no fear…because below are some of my favorite items:

Mustard yellow is such a loud and daring color. Some are afraid to wear this shade of yellow, because if worn incorrectly or in excess (a “matchy-matchy ”outfit) you could end up looking like a walking bottle of mustard(let’s be real). But it’s time for people to muster (pun intended) up the courage to wear this shade of yellow. You’ll look absolutely ravishing, if you wear this color correctly.

I’m a loyal fan of emerald green. However, moss green is surely a fascinating color. This color is like an offspring of dark green and gray. Moss green is definitely a statement color, yet it is a little subdued as well. Thus, you can achieve a trendy yet conservative look with this color.

Although these items may not be “ budget-friendly”, a girl can dream can’t she? Also, I know these colors can seem intimidating because they are so bold. But be a little daring. If you are a bit iffy about wearing these colors, you can ease your way into embracing the fall color trends, by wearing lipstick or nail polish in these shades.

What are some of favorite items from above? Let me know in the comments below….and remember, ALWAYS DARE TO BE CHIC!! ❤

Dare to wear your summer outfits in the fall!!

It seems as though we experience a series of heartaches when summer ends. First and foremost, we have to ditch the beach for school. Thus no more sun-kissed tans, long walks on the beach, barbeques, and getting into shenanigans at the pier.  Not to mention, we also have to store away our newly bought, and ultra-cute, summer wardrobe. But who says we have to retire our favorite shorts, miniskirts, and crop tops? Even though the summer has ended, we can still incorporate some of our summer pieces into our fall wardrobe.

The key to creating a perfect fall ensemble: Layering!

Thanks to the arrival of fall, we can officially say sayonara to warm-weather and hello to plummeting temperatures. There are several must-have accessories and pieces we need to own, in order to transform our light and flirty summer outfits into cozy and chic fall outfits. Let’s take a look at the head to toe pieces you will need to both successfully wear your summer outfits in the fall and survive this cooler weather.

1.       Hats:

Wool floppy hats are a must-have this fall! I simply adore these hats because they allow you to easily add a touch of sophistication to your outfits.  Floppy hats are not just stylish, they serve several other functions as well. Floppy hats keep you warm and protect your hair from harsh and windy weather.

2.       Scarves:

Scarves are the ultimate fall accessory. They are, of course, supposed to keep you warm but they do more than that! Whether they are single-colored, multi-colored or have prints, scarves can give your outfit the right amount of pizzazz and dose of color! They can completely transform a plain and simple outfit into an amazing one.

3.       Sweaters:

If you’re going to wear your summer essentials (tank tops, crop tops, light silk blouses, short-sleeved shirts) in the fall, you will definitely need knitted-long sleeved cardigans to combat the cold and breezy weather. Cardigans are vital for layering and luckily they are available in a variety of colors and styles.

4.       Tights/Thigh High Socks:

Leg wear is a must have if you plan on wearing your shorts, mini-skirts and summer dresses this season. Tights and thigh high socks are probably the most important accessories to own this fall. You can virtually wear any of your favorite summer pieces in the fall if you have one of these two items. Tights/thigh high socks serve to properly cover up your stems and to give you extra added warmth. Additionally, they will allow you to channel your inner school girl. These items can instantly add a dash of cuteness to any outfit.

Now that we’ve established what pieces and accessories we need this fall, let’s take a look at how we can combine these items with our favorite summer pieces.

Look One: Tank top and scarf combo.

Here’s me in my favorite lazy day summer outfit. Pair this outfit with an over-sized cardigan and you’re ready to tackle any nature-related obstacles that fall blows your way.
